Here Come the Trains: Releasing Mozilla Products, Growing the Mozilla Community

60 minutes (45 min talk with 15 min Q&A)

Summary

  • A short intro about the role of release management in the product
  • Channels, rapid releases, versioning, frequency of updates, and other FAQ (basically an overview)
  • Problems unique to shipping Firefox, with anecdotal evidence. Also unique solutions to those problems in the future
    • Scalability of multiple releases, esp. w/r/t community - Firefox, Firefox ESR, Firefox for Android, and Firefox OS
    • Investigating issues while maintaining user privacy
    • 3rd party add-ons/plugins
  • Where we need contributions and how to get involved (applies to Firefox Desktop/Mobile as well as B2G):
    • Install desktop/mobile on devices, rate mobile Firefox in Google Play store
    • Input feedback triage
    • Crash-kill
    • QA testing
    • SUMO
    • L10N
      • The importance of using test channels: Beta/Aurora

Addresses and encourages growth, helping out with mobile & desktop org goals, and providing understanding for much needed participation in improving quality of B2G.

A better understanding of release management & rapid release process. Also a clear path for people with a variety of skill sets on how to help be contribute to improving the quality of products Mozilla releases before, during, and after releases are shipped.
