A global wikipedia for subtitles. 100% free and open.

Help subtitle, caption and translate every video on the web. Universal Subtitles is a software project and online community that's building the world's simplest subtitling tool. We're drawing on contributors around the world to make captioning and translating video free, fun and open to all. Sharing content across languages and cultures, and ensuring those with disabilities can fully experience all the web has to offer.

Subtitles today are too difficult to create and share.

Subtitles and captions are crucial for translation, accessibility and search. But until now, there's been no easy open resource for subtitling -- locking online video behind language barriers and obstacles for the hearing and vision impaired.

We need simple subtitling tools everyone can use.

That's why Mozilla Drumbeat is a part of the Universal Subtitles project. Created by Miro and the Participatory Culture Foundation, Universal Subtitles is a simple subtitling tool anyone can use. It includes a widget and user-friendly interface for adding captions to any video on almost any site, without the hassle of re-uploading. If you can type, (hopefully spell) and press play and pause, you can do it!

Built using open technology and principles, Universal Subtitles can integrate into almost any video host -- opening the doors for anyone, anywhere to caption and translate.

And a global community to translate and ensure quality.

Universal Subtitles is also building an open community and web site for collaboratively subtitling and translating the world’s videos. With your help, this global "wikipedia for subtitles" will provide the largest open source collection of subtitles ever.

Crossing language barriers. With video accessible to all.

Together, our goal for these tools is to create a layer of collective action over the videos we watch, constantly breaking down accessibility barriers. Working with others to define open protocols. And building a global community dedicated to collaborating across languages and borders.

Help Universal Subtitles move from beta to 1.0

The Universal Subtitles beta is now ready for your test-driving and feedback. The next step: push ahead to a full "1.0" version in early 2011. Your donation now will help us fix bugs, add important new features, and enable volunteer "translation teams" around the world. Mozilla will match your donation for the rest of 2010, doubling your impact.
