Drumbeat p2p

A project headline. The big idea in a nutshell.

The web, distributed.

A short description.

The problem you're trying to solve, challenge you're trying to meet, or concrete goal you're seeking.

First of all it's an idea: keeping the web as a free and accessible world to communities implies that people and communities need to be able to share experiences, informations, messages and be constantly updated.

Thus our idea consists of joining some experiments and projects transforming them into something completely new: a social network OVER the internet, a p2p network of Drumbeaters constantly connected to interact on the Web without limits or barriers.

/How?/

In the beginning we imagine a Firefox add-on (and latterly also for other browsers or other mozilla's softwares) to create and develop the Drumbeaters' network. A social-network within Firefox to exchange links, contacts, informations, messages, and ideas. And to be constantly updated about your friends', or group co-members' activities.

If you have this add-on, this will let you dig the Web without jail social-networks into one single tab like with Facebook, Twitter or other social networks web oriented. Even though there are some add-ons that implement the connection client side, they are not altogether. Also it'll be possible to define paths, create online guides, suggestions from users to users, message exchange, attachments and so on.

Our experience starts from Annotea <http://www.w3.org/2001/Annotea/> [1], a W3C <http://www.w3.org/> [2] project (in which we have some past dev experiences) fro annotations over websites. This, transformed into a Firefox add-on, and a little more 2.0 thanks to tags, comments, affinity groups, and integrated instant messenger, can be the first step in creating a completely new web experience. In fact, unlike Google Wave, which brings some web into one window, we bring the possibility to share over the browser itself.

Finally this add-on can be the first step towards a Web of Trust: an aim that could be inside Drumbeat community.

/Annotations/

One of the most interesting features, directly from Annotea moreover, is certainly the one that lets you export (pulling them) contents occasionally selected from occasionally chosen sources.

If, for instance, you find a particular blog post interesting, you will just need to annotate it and post it to Drumbeat website and add-on community, attaching it to a particular project, or a new one, or a discussion. Sharing this would mean that you share the link, and the content itself. Instead of aggregating tons of rss feeds and choosing one, you will choose that very one interested, without wasting, time, cpu, and bandwidth pointlessly.

Or if the information source is a post (say Facebook or twitter) and it's also interesting the following conversation, in a second round of dev releases, it would be possible to get it all to Drumbeat as well.

/From Drumbeat to people/

Obviously we see Drumbeat website as a non site-centric one. It's the other side of the moon.

Though this website, together with Drumbeat project management, it'll be possible to browse all the information assets that groups and people have shared like an encyclopedia of paths, links and materials.

Besides of that, creation of content in Drumbeat could lay both on this technology and other ones, to spread all over the web those contents towards communication channels and social media suitable to them.

Hence publishing on blog post, pictures or video will happen both on Drumbeat website and to blog, photo-sharing, video-sharing platforms, announced on statusphere (twitter, identi.ca <http://identi.ca/>, mozillaca, Facebook) etc.

So in the website it'll be possible to administrate our contents and define how those content could be automatically published on other social-networks using OAuth <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OAuth> [3] or their own web APIs.

This closes the circle, pulling the informations from external conversation and promoting conversations starting from Drumbeat contents.

A one-sentence explanation of how this idea makes the web better.

A distributed social network, over the web to let it free to be browsed and shared between users and groups.

Some tags. To help people find your idea.
