  • Session format: Design Challenge

What will your session or activity allow people to make, learn or do?

We propose to work on basic journalistic problems in digital age, where investigative researchers deals with zillions of documents in different formats looking for relationships. We will encourage participants to solve or share ways of dealing with this issues: semantic analytics and processing documents, extracting entities (datamining), analize and "save" facts in a database system, the historic problem of correferences between entities (for example, how to deal with names who refer to the same person), and also wich are the best ways to visualize facts: timelines, maps, networks graphs, treemaps, or others.

How do you see that working?

We will make teams integrated by coders, journalists, dataminers, designers, for each one of those issues and try to bring at least one new idea and work on different final solutions. For example, putting some datasets in common we expect different ways to visualize facts, look for connections from people in the same place or in different places.

How will you deal with 5, 15, 50 participants?

20/25 participants

How long within your session before someone else can teach this?

Between two or three hours.

What do you see as outcomes after the festival?

After this Design Challenge session we expect to have at least 5 o 6 new ideas on how to solve those problems and we expect some new prototypes apps for facts visualizations and relationships. We expect collaborative resolution of universals journalistics problems and visualization relashionships. We also expect to engage people to work through this after the Mozilla Festival.
