Semantic Editing on a Tablet : Make it Work

  • Title of session: Semantic Editing on a Tablet : Take an existing semantic HTML5 web editor and design a tablet version.
  • Organizers:
    • Kathi Fletcher: Shuttleworth Foundation Fellow / OERPUB
    • Marvin Reimer: OERPUB
  • Session Format: Design Challenge

What will your session or activity allow people to make, learn or do?

We will start with a new remixing, semantic web editor (slides: http://www.slideshare.net/oerpub/open-textbooks-creation-and-remixing-made-easy), based on the Aloha editor, and extended to create and edit remixable, semantic, structured content, in a way that is designed to be used by any author, anywhere. The design challenge is to figure out what kinds of editing people will want to do on their tablet devices and how to support that well. And we will experiment with adapting to code and even try out the ideas on other festival goers.

How do you see that working?

After a brief intro and demonstration of the editor, we will divide divide into small groups and brainstorm about how people will edit on their tablets. The groups will present and choose the most important user stories. Then we will divide into small groups of developers and designers and design ui to support those stories. In the final portion, developers will attempt to encode the new designs.

How will you deal with 5, 15, 50 participants?

The challenge works with groups of 3 to 7 people so we will break into that size to accommodate additional groups. We will have two developers for sure that know the code well, but they won't be able to help everyone individually, so we will pair developers up in the last part of the challenge so they can help each other.

How long within your session before someone else can teach this?

Participants should be comfortable leading groups in creating a user story and doing quick brainstorming designs for tablets within the sessions.

What do you see as outcomes after the festival?

Developers from other projects that could use an easy to learn structured editor for web authors, will be familiar with a new editor that can be customized and adapted for a wide range of uses. Our team will continue developing throughout the festival and will welcome continued participation throughout the festival.
