Webmakers, physics and the web

  • Title of session: webmakers, physics and the web
  • Your name and affiliation: Dany Javier Bautista, ReMo, Mozilla School of webcraft evangelist.
  • Session format: Design Challenge, Learning Lab, || Fireside Chat

What will your session or activity allow people to make, learn or do?

In this session the assistants will use web technologies as Javascript, css and html for create basic physics simulations, using concepts as gravity, newton laws and a touch of calculus, even if a assistant dont have a physics knowledge this could be the start of self motivated study of physics, and the beginning of webmakers that want to make cool stuff with the knowledge adquired in the school or university.

How do you see that working?

well, first i will remember to the assistants the basic physics concepts and after each concept and a little example, the idea is create teams and start to solve an easy problem, using Javascript for simulate the situation and boom!, challenge and peer based knowledge in action.

How will you deal with 5, 15, 50 participants?

with five people we organize just one team and we start to discuss the concepts and the simulations, always, all together contributing to the solution. 4 or 5 simulations.

with fifteen people , we will organize us in 3 teams and then when all teams have created the simulation, we will share the simulations between all teams, speak about the experience and fix if is needed all together. 3 o 4 simulations.

with 50 people, we will organize us in 10, less amount of simulations and problems a bit more complex , and more deeper reflections after each review.2 or 3 simulations.

How long within your session before someone else can teach this?

60-90 min

What do you see as outcomes after the festival?

peer learning and knowledge networks between the assistants, this could result in ideas for new challenges in colleges and universities , for physics and almost all fields in science. a new team of mozilla webmakers who can share this experiences with their peers and their local communities and well, if the assistants are from schools bring ideas for the their future studies.
