We recently set up a channel switcher as part of the rapid release infrastructure to allow Aurora, Beta and Final release users to switch among those builds. The channel switcher has never been tested before, as currently the channel switcher only allows users to be on Aurora.
The switcher team wants to test the channel switcher before pushing out 5.0 beta to make sure we don't strand any of our users.
What we have decided to do is to create a copy of aurora that is basically a "fake beta". It will be called beta in name, but is no different from Aurora as it stands now. We will serve an about:home snippet to Aurora users asking them to update to "Beta" to help us test the channel switcher. In the snippet, there will be a link to a SUMO article explaining what the channel switcher is and how to use it and asking for feedback about the users experience. Hopefully, some Aurora users will see the snippet and switch to the fake beta. On load of the fake beta, they will see a post from dev planning/ or other personal blog thanking them for testing the switcher and asking them to switch back to Aurora and give us feedback about the experience.
The communication will clarify that this beta is not actually a beta and is only being used to make sure the channel switcher works as expected. It will ask users to give feedback from the help/submit feedback link in the menu, and we will track users to see how many people switched back from beta to aurora. Any stragglers on the fake beta will be updated to the "real" Fx 5 beta when its ready.
