In projects that allow embedding images in external link style, an image can be used as "link label":

What it looks like What you type
External page with an external image:

logo.gif

[http://www.google.com http://www.google.com/images/logo.gif]

Internal page with external image:
http://www.google.com/images/logo.gif

[[Help:Redirect|http://www.google.com/images/logo.gif]]

External page with internal image:
http:../upload/b/bc/Wiki.png

[http://www.google.com http:../upload/b/bc/Wiki.png]

Internal page with internal image:
http:../upload/b/bc/Wiki.png

[[Help:Redirect|http:../upload/b/bc/Wiki.png]]

Compare File:Catapult.jpg, also an internal image, linking to the same internal page. Note that on the target page a redirect message is shown, while also the image is inserted in that page. This method is possible on all projects.
