Why?
For the short-term, alternative app stores are a good opportunity to increase the addressable market and go into a different environment where there is less competition which allows our browser to stand out more. The long-term play for this feature is getting access into the Android stores that are shipped on Androids in China, which is a requirement for us to be able to significantly be able to tap that market.
Requirements for getting into alternative app stores
- we need to improve updater (snorp)
- build metrics collection into the updater
- integrate submission to new store into QA and RelEng workload
- legal review of ToS
- optimization of marketing assets for new store
This is a project which requires relatively low resources
*do we think it is important? yes, short-term to get us more ADIs and long-term because of China
- short term to-dos: finish updater work for fx 18, request ToS, specs for submission from the 1st app store: Appia
- long term to-dos: look closer into Chinese market, see what app stores are popular, what devices
- I requested the specs from Appia, waiting to get them back. Is the work on the updater still on track for Fx 18?
