Why?
- Helps our ADIs because we add more users from other platforms
- iOS has a lot of browser hungry users (lots of browsing on iOS)
Potential platforms
- iOS
- Metro (Tablet, handled by desktop)
- Windows Phone (has IE7? and we can beat it. Needs NDK)
- Bada
- Android x86
- Google TV
- We probably want to stivk with Native UIs for phones, for the same reason we used it on Android
iOS Strategy
- Use as much of Gecko as we can. Don't just punt to a Webkit wrapper.
- We can get more HTML5, HTTP, Add-ons, WebRTC and other new features supported on our own timeline
- Should we consider jailbroken phones at all? It would help us get testing before we submit to the store
- Do we focus on phones, tablets or both?
Actions
- Let's land any patches to get Fennec working on iOS
- Get Product to commit to a research project to get a baseline of performance
- Get Legal to understand what the App Store limitations really are
- Get an NDK for Windows Phone 8 from Microsoft ASAP (if one is really available)
Questions in general
- Are we finished enough on Android? Have we proved ourselves there enough?
- What are the chances of success on any platform?
- Is Windows Phone a better space?
- More greenfield
- IE is a worse browser, better chance for Firefox to shine
- So many desktop users so Sync would have more target audience
- Do we need a better embedding system to handle multiple platforms without adding a lot of work on each platform?
