Goals

  • Satisfy the vocal minority who care a lot about privacy
    • Potentially implement via a separate profile?
  • Three use cases:
    • sharing device and not leaking browsing history
    • not leaking information to servers/websites that you interact with
    • profiles for different users (for tablets)
  • Feature Set:
    • feature parity to desktop (i.e. private browsing is available)
    • feature that has an "auto" timeout for certain idle time, so that user doesn't come back and find something embarassing in their browser at a later time (since mobile applications are not typically exited when finished with a browsing session)
    • add a feature for the browser to "learn" which sites should be private-browsing, and warn you if you visit those sites outside private browsing mode
    • kinder mode" - child-safe browsing, with adult websites/etc blocked
  • OEM Support
    • differentiator between other browsers/products
    • may be a requirement in some countries - more of the responsibility of the carrier for restricting bad content
  • Support key marketing campaign
    • bad situations where this could be a life-saving thing?
    • utilize the concept of "parental mode" and "guest-specific browsing" to differentiate our product and leverage our brand
  • Do we still believe this is a useful topic?
    • Yes, but we should take a step back and look at the most important features of this project and think about these first. We need it to be on par with the competition.
  • What could we do this week to advance this topic?
    • Mockups of how it might work, how it might look. (also mockups for the learning feature)
    • Find out what timetable for desktop-based "per tab" private browsing. (UPDATE: bug 463027 is tracking the ability to add per-tab private browsing, and it looks like it won't be ready soon enough for us)
  • What are the 1 or 2 things that we could do over the next few weeks?
    • Basic implementation of private mode browsing over using separate profiles.
    • What can we do over the long term?
    • Iterate over the basic implementation a bit more, so that we can add more differentiating features.
