'''- What is Boot to Gecko?'''
Boot to Gecko (B2G) is an early-stage, exploratory a project with the goal of building a complete, standalone operating system for the open Web. It is not a product offering, but if successful, could form the basis for one.
'''- Could you explain what the overall aim is with the project? What problems are you keen to address with it?'''
'''- When can we expect to see something?'''
We're very early in the projectare currently working towards a developer phone based on B2G, soliciting suggestions and contributions from a lot of people. As which we have more specific estimates for different pieces of functionality, they'll be shared widelyintend to show at Mobile World Congress 2012.
'''- What is the size of the team working on this project?'''
It's very small right now: just 3 people working part time, but we're looking to ramp up and as an open project we We are actively inviting participation of developers, designers, and others from across the Web. We're seeing lots of excitement and offers of help already, and we're also obviously leaning heavily on the existing Gecko and Firefox mobile workand the team of hundreds of engineers building those products. 95% of the code in B2G is shared with Firefox. As of the time this page was last updated, more than 20 engineers were working full-time on B2G-specific parts of the system (telephony, messaging, system-level phone integration). In addition to Mozilla contributors, engineers from carrier partners are working jointly with us on the project as well.
'''- What does it mean for your relationships with Apple, Google, Microsoft?'''
'''- Are OEMs interested in B2G?'''
This Currently B2G is an early-stage still a projectwithout a firm product schedule. We just got startedare briefing silicon vendors (ODMs), OEMs and carriers on B2G, so and we haven’t had any of those discussions yet. If an OEM shares our vision of will announce a standard product schedule and open platform from top to bottom, we’d be happy to work together to get such a platform into the hands of userslaunch partners once we reach that stage.
'''- Whose hardware will you support?'''
We’ll be selecting initial We are currently using off-the shelf developer hardware for hackability and general availability(Samsung Galaxy S 2), but we haven’t settled on that yet. A Tegra 2 because the device is likely commercially available to be selected, due Mozilla employees and community members. We will port B2G to its support for VP8 hardware acceleration. Over time a reference platform once we expect have identified the ODM/OEM that will ship the first B2G device. That reference platform will work on likely be very different than the majority of devices that support modern Android versionsSamsung Galaxy S 2.
- '''Is B2G just introducing yet another platform for devs to code for?'''
- '''How do you think you'll get the mobile manufacturers and carriers on board with this?'''
B2G is designed to build on the success of the Web, and given the early stage of the project it could reach users in many forms. We're certainly interested in working with ODMs, OEMs , carriers and others who share our vision of even greater success for Web-based applications.<br>
'''- What would B2G offer mobile users that HTML5 doesn't?'''
