The Beta release came in two parts, on March 1st, during the DML conference in San Francisco, an initial private beta was launched that showcased the new Issuer API, a functioning Backpack, and a basic Displayer view.  The full public beta will add several enhancements to the DML-launched private beta:

In addition to the technology improvements above, a significant portion of the work for Beta launch is documentation related.  This Beta will be many users, issuers and displayers first interaction with the OBI, so it's important that on-boarding process is positive.
