Strategy/Summit2013
Overview
We'd like to hear from you on the strategic direction of Mozilla, its projects, and products. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of our portfolio and the threats and opportunities our markets provide is what we're all about. We know people have ideas about what those are and where we should go, and we'd like to hear from them. Here's how you can engage with us.
Things to Think About
Ideas are Strategy's foundation. Ideas identify the opportunities or gaps we have, and how we can address them through changes in Mozilla's projects, processes, and products. Strategy defines a path: where we are, where we want to be, what route we'd take to get there and - perhaps most importantly - why we want to go there. We really want to hear what people's ideas are, and would ask that you think about a couple things when putting them together.
- Keep it simple and maintain a positive focus on where we want to be vs. how we got to where we are.
- Start and finish with an idea; not the full solution to realize the idea.
- Define the opportunity or weakness you see, and why it matters. (the Problem Statement)
- Outline the idea you have that addresses the Problem Statement, and what the desired outcome of implementing the idea would be (the Victory Condition).
- Identify who (or what) benefits from the idea, and what the implications are of acting on the idea as well as NOT acting on it.
- List out challenges you see to turning it from an idea to a reality. This can be anything; resources, ideology, level of effort, etc.
We want to get people thinking and iterating on ideas as a start. Discussion and validation come after. Starting with a simple summary (a page, at most!) that gets your idea across helps ensure people can (and do) read and respond to that idea. This isn't a one-size-fits-all rule, but it's something to think about.
Sharing Ideas
So, where do we share these ideas? Probably the best way is through Mozilla's traditional channels: wikis, direct email & IRC (see below), and news groups/mailing lists.
<Newsgroup/Mailing List Name> TBD - Check back by Oct 9, use direct channels for now.
Contacting Us Directly
We like discussion in the open, but we recognize that there are some conversations people would like to have in private. We're always happy to facilitate those conversations, and can be reached directly through the contact information in Mozilla's Mozillians site. Please feel free to get in touch, we want to hear from you.
