UNOFFICIAL SUMO Firefox for Desktop 61 Support Report

  • Release date was Tuesday June 26, 2018

Source Documents

tl;dr for stakeholders

  • Anti-virus issues yet again, every 7 weeks (e.g.FF60 was Kaspersky, FF61 is Avast), painful and needless anti-virus issues IMHO AV vendors need to address this :-) <--- Anti-virus issues like this affect Chrome as well as Firefox
  • Bookmark issues and Activity Stream issues point to the fact that we need more automated testing of SQLite and IndexedDB since there might be bugs we haven't found yet with other software that uses SQLite and IndexedDB

Week 1 (June 26-July 2, 2018)

  • 29June2018 bug 1472127 - Update to Firefox 61.0 killed all my bookmarks and also the backups are unreadable <-- unclear how common this is but will probably have a 61.0.1 the week of july 3 for this.
  • 28June2018 bug 1471672#c18 ---> Normandy recipe to flip the TLS 1.3 pref rolled out, waiting for Avast to fix their software before we flip the pref back to turning TLS 1.3 on
  • 28June2018 bug 1468892#c60 <--- "As of now Avast does appear to have patched the problem. Running with Avast update 180628-08 both FF61.0 and FF62.0b3 are not experiencing any problems. Both are making TLS 1.3 connections with bleepingcomputer.com, www.theregister.co.uk, and tls13.crypto.mozilla.org. Sorry to cause you folks so much trouble... 1/2 ;-)" <--- so Avast fixed it?!? To Be Confirmed
  • 27June2018 bug 1468892 - SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG with Avast interpreting TLS 1.3 connections incorrectly ---> Avast (and probably AVG) has a TLS bug that is affecting Firefox <--- hooray a*ti virus, NOT :-)

Week 2 (July 3-9, 2018)

  • 05July2018 Firefox 61.0.1 released with fix for bookmarks, web pages not rendering in China regression, missing activity stream content regression, twitch.tv video clip 1080p playback has momentary freezes <-- released at 25%, moved to 50% on Monday July 8th
  • 03July2018 - There is a privacy issue with the Stylish add-on, which is now blocklisted (see bug 1472948 for the background).
Here are some unofficial links: HN
    • July 18, 2018: Stylish fixed the problem and is no longer blocked as of version 3.1.5<--- source

Week 3 (July 10-16, 2018)

Week 4 (July 17-23, 2018)

  • July 19, 2018 bug 1476871 Geolocation via Google's service stopped working on release/beta builds <--- fixed in a few hours
  • bug 1471375 - Reports about missing activity stream content on new tab page and about:preferences#home panel ---> Post-Mortem: Activity Stream / IndexedDB 61.0.1 <--- MoCo only tl;dr:
    • Summary: Activity Stream expanded its usage of IndexedDB in 61 with section collapsed state as part of a move away from storing data as preferences. Some users upgrading to Release 61.0 reported missing new tab page content, and one ran the mozregression tool to narrow down the issue to an export containing 11 fixed bugs. Activity Stream telemetry for failed IndexedDB showed a significant increase for Release users.
    • Other software that uses indexdb might have bugs too

Week 5 (July 24-30, 2018)

Week 6 (July 31-August 6, 2018)

  • bug 1477042 <--- Add a pref for counting URIs in private browsing mode for a future Shield study, this will result in shipping a Firefox 61.0.2

Week 7 (August 7-13, 2018)

  • 08August2018 ---> Firefox 61.0.2 ships with Windows Restart Manager at 10% of Windows users (automatically restore Firefox after Windows restart) and aforementioned bug 1477042; draft release notes
