Motivation: Skill seekers (estimated 60-80%)

  • The Student

In school, looking for the skills that lead to the internship that leads to the job.

  • The Transplant

Has some college in another field, maybe sees that field shrinking, decides to re-tool skills.

  • The Refresher

Has been in tech before, maybe with old skills. Looking to come up-to-date. May be between jobs -- likely to have lots of time and high commitment level. Caution: Skills may be variable.

  • The Explorer

Already employed in tech, maybe in QA. Looking to expand skill set. May not be socially motivated.

Motivation: Open Source Geeks (estimated 10%)

  • The Hobbyist

Already has skills, looking for a place to exercise them and maybe make some social contacts. May also be looking for a place to show off.

  • The Joiner

Wants to be 'part of the team.' May or may not have real skills or staying power, but is primarily attracted by the social aspects of coding, meetups, hackathons, etc.

  • The Activist

May or may not have skills, but wants to contribute to the Free Software or Open Source movements, and sees Mozilla as the biggest lever to move the culture. May be acutely interested in diversity and related initiatives.

Motivation: Firefox or some specific project (estimated 10-15%)

  • The Hyperfocused

Has one (or more) specific bugs that really need to be fixed. May drop off after getting enough attention to the problem.

  • The Tinkerer

Has a pet project that may be a bit off the beaten path but exists somewhere in the Firefox ecosystem. Wants to explore how Firefox and related technologies work in order to improve the other project.
