Concerning the redesign I'm not sure whether the cosmetic changes need to be so deep. A minimalist look could be achieved by combining tiny menu and the navigation bar.

In addition rather than moving the tab bar anywhere why not use the Hide Caption Titlebar Plus this would give place the minimise, restore and close buttons on the same bar. This would in one move reduce three bars (with bookmarks toolbar remove and left to the side), and maximise screen usage.

The only thing Firefox needs to do is maybe intergrate these features to stop wastage on memory.

One useful option maybe to integrate something similar to All-In-One Sidebar and opera showing options that can be readily hid.
