Project Summary

Adagio, formerly called Remote Audio Mixing, is a collaborative, cloud-based music education app. RAM allows both professional musicians and aspiring student musicians to manipulate multi-track audio recordings in a simple, intuitive interface on any device. A beta of this application will be piloted with the Chattanooga Public Library and with music classes at Barger Academy of Fine Arts, a local public elementary school.

Project Timeline

Weeks 1 - 3Transform student-developed proof-of-concept to reusable, distributable open source package for live mixing of audio streams.

Weeks 4 - 6 Develop server infrastructure supporting multiple users and simultaneous mixing projects.

Weeks 7 - 9 Develop ios app.

Weeks 10 - 12 Testing and deployment

Project Partners

Some proposed educational institutions for the first pilot of Adagio are:

  • Barger Academy of Fine Arts
  • Normal Park Museum Magnet
  • Baylor School

We will also work with the Chattanooga Library to create a music lab where Adagio will be tested and use cases studied.

In addition, we will look to other Chattanooga partners to help us capture content for Adagio, spread the word about the music lab, and more.

Metrics and Outcomes

Technical Outcomes

We are developing new code in C++ and Javascript for manipulating audio on a server and streaming it. We will be releasing the core audio processing functionality as a new open source project.

Along the way we will have developed, in addition to the raw functionality, a better understanding of latency and scalability concerns that apply when dealing with server-based audio manipulation.

Learning Outcomes

By participating in the pilot program in the library's creative music lab, students will learn the following...

  • Music comprehension through Adagio's progressive learning curriculum, centered around a piece of music
  • Collaborative skills by understanding the ways in which various instrument track works within the piece

Community Outcomes

What, if any, are the impacts of this project on the broader community?

It is our goal to build out a creative music lab within the second floor of the Downtown Public Library in Chattanooga, TN. This space will be a beta showroom where individuals, educational institutions and others will be able to come in and play around on the various instruments, while creating content for Adagio that they will be able to access and play around with at any point after they've left the library.
