AGENDA

Discover Launch (Chloe, Mike 10 mins)

Context / Links:

Notes:

  • The illustration/design is so fun!+1+1 love it so much.
  • Can't wait to start using this to scaffold contribution in Webmaker (and Web Literacy pathways!)
  • The idea is that pathways are not only badges but they are apart of your personal story
  • The cross-career badges are amazeballs
  • Looks awesome! There is a big gap in the UK in terms of young people exploring different jobs I think. The number of people I interviewed for University level teacher training who did it cos a parent did... Love this idea for exploring possibilities & showing the pathways.
  • This looks so great and comprehensive!!
  • Audience = pre-college youth

Questions:

  • Emma - not on the call but will read after ;) LinkedIn is often used (rightly or not) as a measure of one's professional accomplishments. I've felt LinkedIn reflected less than half of my achievements(I'm sure I'm not alone). +1 to that! Are there visions of a Discover API plugin to such social networks?  I seem to remember a Mark Surman post on this topic.
    • v1 doesn't connect out very much, not even to the Backpack (yet)
    • curious what you'd imagine such a plugin doing? I think there's lots of room, and the related badges directory work takes a big step towards connecting badges across issuers: https://github.com/mozilla/openbadges-directory
  • Doug: Is the official announcement blog post live yet? [I wrote one here: http://literaci.es/mozilla-discover]
  • Took me awhile to figure out how to make my own pathway. Could that be more prominent?
    • most likely! we'd like to add a tutorial that walks users through it, user testing showed that teens were reluctant to pledge pathways, drag badges, etc. ++ the idea of a tutorial or led experience is a good one, for people who are just getting started. Yes definitely, we had this quiz designed up but didn't get to implement it.
      • we've also kicked around the idea of connecting ACTUAL HUMANS who are pursuing similar pathways, either at a similar point in them or someone who has finished with someone getting started as a mentor, etc.Such a cool idea!
  • Is there a GitHub repo? How can people fork/improve this?
  • Can there be an elephant badge? :P
    • good memory? +1 afraid of mice?
  • I can't add badges to my new pathway - what am i doing wrong ;)?
    • Need to favourite the badges first OH! not clear, sorry, I know it's a prototype :D also, it's awesome
  • IS there something for career changers, I have this job, and these skills and what does this match up with for other people?
    • recommendations were part of the original design but haven't made it into the implementation yet, but it seems like a data-rich area for doing those sorts of analytics agreed, this would be quite interesting (and another thing other sites like linked in don't offer...) +1
  • You should talk to the people at https://choirup.com (deconstructing expertise through video  interviews)
  • I am from India, I called to the number but it says enter the access code followed by the pond sign. What i have to enter there? and Is this a toll free number?and if you have given that number to join the call then why are you chatting in the pad? Please answer these questions, so that I will able to join the next call.

How to get involved:

Webmaker refresh - sneak peak! (Matt, 10 mins)

Context / Links:

Notes:

Questions:

  • Do people know where to start on https://webmaker.mofostaging.net/en-US/resources?
    • It's very obvious that the WebLitMap is clickable on laptop/desktop (because of hover) - how about on tablets/mobile?
  • I'm doing a presentation on webmaking at a small conference for teachers tomorrow, what are your suggestions for ways to get them excited about using this in classroom?
    • show them the pages. get excited about it yourself :) +1 [also talk about the difference between teaching 'coding' and a more holistic learning experience around web literacy - e.g. http://dmlcentral.net/blog/doug-belshaw/going-beyond-learning-code-why-2014-year-web-literacy] +1, I think through exploring it together on a screen, you'll find things that excite you, or content that pops out. Like Chloe's "Discover" pages, this can really be a "choose your own adventure" kind of experience.
    • apply for a badge?
    • Ask them for feedback too, we would LOVE to know what people think of the content!
    • I have loads of slides here that can help frame the brainy stuff around web literacy, the webmaker tools, etc. Cut, paste, copy remix!!: http://zythepsary.com/mozilla/presentations

How to get involved:

  • Join this thread on the Webmaker newsgroup. Let us know what you think of these new pages and features. https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/mozilla.webmaker
  • File bugs. All the work is on staging, so we can get your help with testing and fixing.
  • See what’s coming in the next “Honeybadger” release on June13. <--I smell a meme-based release cycle ;-)
  • Join the conversation with Kat on June 16 to explore Webmaker's new Literacies pages https://plus.google.com/events/ct1fda3ncs13m61kuu4pgledin0

ROBORAMPAGE hackable game (Mike)

Context/Links:

  • http://stenington.github.io/roborampage/   Slighted addicted already- not slightly. I am! Ha me too...it's hard until I realized it's all about the teleportation i know, changes everything!!!! :) you can also hack the player/robot speeds >_> HACKING ISN'T CHEATING!
    • follow links on that page to Thimble tutorials
  • based on a nice micro framework for canvas games: https://github.com/maryrosecook/coquette

Notes:

  • I'm  working on a simple game with what I hope is a highly hackable game  mechanic, and a set of tutorials to walk through the basics of changing  visuals, adding AI or game mechanics, etc.
  • Feedback welcome!
    • Nice!

Questions:

  • Is this related to http://minica.de/ ?
    • Not right now, however it may do in the future.
    • Would be easy to make it a minicade minigame, but I was worried the time limit would be too stressful
