- Are we sure this is only add-on users? This looks a lot like all Sync users. Firefox 4.0.x will report as 1.7b1pre, Firefox Mobile 4.0.x will report as 1.7. (The above '''Note''' is both incorrect and misleading.) --philikon | |||

Sync Add-on EOL Plan
Summary
The Sync Add-on which was the precursor to having Sync integrated into the client is no longer being supported. The add-on has been disabled for 4+ Firefox desktop users. This is the plan of action to end of life the add-on. The goal is to have the add-on removed from AMO on 7/5/11.
Current Add-on Metrics
The number of requests with Sync add-on still show a huge portion of requests coming from 1.7b1pre. See this metrics query and filter by Weave Version: https://metrics.mozilla.com/pentaho/content/pentaho-cdf-dd/Render?solution=metrics&path=/weblogs/weave&file=weave_requests.wcdf
- Note: This number is a bit misleading, because those on FF 4+ with an add-on are being reported as using the add-on, but they are really using Sync in the client.
- Are we sure this is only add-on users? This looks a lot like all Sync users. Firefox 4.0.x will report as 1.7b1pre, Firefox Mobile 4.0.x will report as 1.7. (The above Note is both incorrect and misleading.) --philikon
Tasks
These are the tasks that need to be completed.
Task | Due Date | Owner | Status |
Disable add-on download on AMO and add a message to page, "The Sync Add-on is no longer supported and will be removed from AMO in early July. Firefox Sync is built into Firefox 4 and later! We recommend you upgrade to the latest Firefox version instead of installing this add-on." | Soon as can be | Philipp or Richard | Need to confirm with philikon or rnewman when they can do this |

Update Product Planning team on QA plan | 6/22 | Jen | Need to know if in FF 4+, will there be regression test coverage for the add-on |
Track drop-off of add-on users | Continuous | Jen | Today we have XXX on ver 1.7. This will drop off as people move onto using the integrated version of Sync. Can we verify that reporting will switch from 1.7* to 1.8+ when a user removes an add-on from FF4+? |

Support Plan
For users on Firefox 3.6: Please advise them to upgrade to Firefox 4 and then uninstall the Sync Add-on.
- For all users, tools->Add-ons then select "remove" next to the Sync Firefox add-on (is this true for all OS's?)
Sync will keep working as it did before. Here are directions for looking at Sync preferences:
- windows users can go to menu drop down -> options ->options and then the Sync tab (Need to double check these instructions)
- mac users go to Firefox -> Preferences ->Sync tab
- linux users ???
For users of Firefox 4 and later with the Sync Add-on: Please advise them to uninstall the Sync Add-on.
Heads Up: As of Firefox 5 and later, the user will get a message that the Firefox Sync Add-on is incompatible with the desktop browser. This is because the compat flag is not set on in FF5+. Sync is still working and the user should be advised to uninstall the add-on. See instructions above.
