What is the Net Effects program?

A. Net Effects is an experimental program designed to encourage millions of people to share their thoughts about how the Net has changed their life. It is a part of the work that Mozilla is doing to help make openness, participation and distributed decision-making common experiences in Internet life.

How do I get started?

A. Watch our sample videos and then read the Participation Guide

What ways can I participate?

A. Currently, you can comment on the program and create sample videos. If you are interested, apply to join our Net Effects mailing list (or just read what is discussed on the list.)

As the program matures, you will be able to:

  • Read text of the statements
  • Watch video statements
  • Make video statements
  • Subtitle video statements
  • Make mashups with the video statements
  • Become a reviewer
  • Translate the text of the video statements
  • Convert videos into free/open video formats

Video Content, Length and Style

How long should a video be?

A. Videos should be from 3 to 12 seconds long - just the amount of time it takes to answer the question of, "What is one way that the Net has changed your life?"

Do I have to speak English in my video?

A. No. We encourage you to use any language that you speak fluently.

Do the videos need to be about me?

A. Not quite. Each video must be about the person it features.

Can I do a video with someone else?

A. That would be great! Just follow the other rules.

Can I promote a commercial interest or my blog in my video?

A. You could, be we won't index videos that are overly commercial or promotional in nature.
