Samsung announced a new home screen app for its Android phones called "Terrain". The app has a very "Now" card-centric look, and has similar goals of presenting the info you need most without entering apps.
Why we should care: Lots of convergence in this space, with variations on the core themes of Google Now, and all are (largely) proprietary. Continued opportunity to differentiate cross-platform, but the window will close.

Worth a Read

• Umeng's latest take on the Chinese mobile market is up. They claim to be tracking 780MM devices in China, and give a good overview of the Chinese market, how it's segmented, and what connected device use looks like (smaller markets are growing faster than primaries). 4G is rolling into those smaller markets, who focus on bang-for-buck vs. name recognition with their smartphones.
• Ars has a History of Android up that's worth a read. Lots of screenies showing UI development from 0.5 on.

Notes

• The Chinese government has posted a list of 310 patents Microsoft requires Android OEMs to license. While OEMs licensing this patent suite isn't news, the details of which patents are licensed hasn't been released in the past.
• Celkon has released a $50USD KitKat phone in India. Minimal specs (DS, 1Ghz, 256MB RAM, 512MB flash), and it's not clear how well it performs, but it supports 3G networks.
• Latest Android update changes the permissions model so that users are no longer notified of changes to a permissions group they have already accepted (vs. individual permissions)
• Parallels adds remote desktop access to iOS and Android, competing in a crowded space aimed at Enterprise users.
