Firefox/Projects/High-value Firefox 4 bugs

This is a prioritized, abridged list of the bugs that the UX team thinks are important. The full version of what we're tracking can be found at Firefox/Projects/UX Priorities, but this is a great list to start with if you want to help out making Firefox 4 better.

These are bugs that:

  • do not currently have blocking status,
  • are not polish bugs (of which there are many, and with the understanding that we should be able to block on polish bugs when we get to that phase, especially theme-related)
  • the UX team considers as major wins for Firefox 4,
  • we'd like to see people pick up, provide fixes for — or possibly even mark as blockers.

These do not include issues from: Panorama (Aza is building an equivalent list of his own), Sync (not being staffed by Johnath, if I understand it correctly), and the Add-ons Bar (which we have a hard time evaluating from a UX perspective right now). It's not because we think these aren't important.

In order of priority:

  1. [Add-ons] Blocking third-party extension installs: bug 596343: — critical to a fast user experience, especially on startup.
  2. [Add-ons] Removing duplicate add-ons: bug 596392 - critical to providing a fast user experience, users may only give us one more chance when they hear 4 is out
  3. [New Theme] Tabs in titlebar on Windows on maximize: bug 572160 (available as option on the Mac) (ask jimm)? — expected functionality now that other browser have it, and makes good use of screen space.
  4. [Performance] Painting of browser window slow compared to 3.6: bug 594821 - looks really broken right now
  5. [Performance] URL autocomplete should be enabled: bug 566489 — how quickly a user can get to a site is a key part of the perceived performance, we also need to do a better job with the audience that “speaks URLs”
  6. [New Theme] Display the domain in black and the path in grey: bug 451833 — makes domains more readable and prominent, parity with other browsers
  7. [Tabs] Animated tab dragging/detaching: bug 455694 (just the detaching: bug 485105)
  8. [New Theme] Streamline the visual appearance of the search field: bug 592909
  9. [Firefox Menu] Add zoom controls to the Firefox menu: bug 592147
  10. [App tabs] Chromeless by default, option to turn it back on: bug 585445 — an important reason why app tabs are useful and better
  11. [Tabs] Tab multiselect: bug 566510 — Has a really well thought-out design spec and implementation; it's a feature no other browser currently has
  12. [Performance] Non-modal JS dialogs: (alert/confirm/prompt) bug 59314 (Dolske has WIP, some missing back-end pieces, at risk)
  13. [Tabs] Groups from Panorama should show in List All Tabs: bug 596017
  14. [Tabs] List All Tabs menu should list closed tabs/windows for more obvious undo: bug 597593 — Tabs belong in the tab menu!
  15. [Add-ons] Don't let add-ons that are not compatible with an unsupported version of Firefox stop you from upgrading: bug 597598 — i.e. an add-on that doesn't work with 3.6 nor with 4.0 shouldn't stop you from upgrading your Firefox 3.5 to 4.0
  16. [Tabs] Make Search local to the tab (at least for tabs-on-top): bug 565740
  17. [Tabs] Eliminate redundant text when multiple tabs have the same partial title: bug 583890
  18. [Firefox Menu] Making sure Work Offline is removed, and never stuck in offline mode: bug 539535
  19. [Notifications] Convert notification bars to doorhangers: httpauth bug 567804, Popups blocked bug 588317, XPI install bug 588266
  20. [Dataloss] Fixed: Set default of browser.sessionstore.privacy_level to 0: bug 424872 — we should to save users from dataloss, and figure out security implications (timeout, clear on exit)
  21. [Performance] Fixed: Ghost the reload button instead of ghosting the Stop button so we don't add N ms to every page load: bug 596428 — this makes every page load seem slower
  22. [New Theme] Fixed: Move RSS button to secondary UI: bug 578967
  23. [Tabs] Fixed: No reloading of plugins when window is re-parented: bug 449734
  24. [App tabs] Fixed: External links from within app tabs should open in new tabs: bug 575561
