Digital Media and Learning Conference debrief (5 mins)
- What did we learn? What do we need to follow up on?
- Let's create grist for a round-up blog post together (any volunteers to write it?):
- Mozilla Science Fair
- Overall: big win. We're getting good at these.
- nice flow with lots of room to move and no corners
- The new whiteboards are awesome.
- Need a clear floor plan in advance, with multiple printed copies. so exhibitors know where to set up. +1 (it was my fault. I got stuck in a cab and was an hour later than planned. :-( — michelle t)
- Don't be so hard on yourself! you *killed* it. This is in the spirit of creating a Science Fair checklist for next time around. :)
- Need more bling to help brand and transform the space.
- more Mozilla (non FF) swag in general
- Gobos and projected lights are cheap, good ways to do this
- Need better spaces in general
- Overall: big win. We're getting good at these.
- Validation for "Making as Learning" meme
- This was a huge theme at the event.
- A big part of the education world is transitioning from "learning as reading stuff" to "learning as making stuff"
- Can't we establish the meme without it being contradictory to others? It's not transitioning it's expanding.
- Democratizing Learning Innovation session underscored this shift
- Lots of excitement around the webmaker skill/learning design work, lots of people want to help
- Remixing as a metric (jess)
- many of the edtech projects that presented showed research around remixing within their various platforms
- Need to follow up with this for our projects and to dive deeper with what we mean when we say "remix"
- Add your items here
Open Badges / DML Badges Competition winners announced (Erin + badges team)
(5 mins)
- Blog post: MacArthur Foundation competition winners use Mozilla software to supercharge learning
- http://mzl.la/ygSgEM
- Overall: huge win
- competition wildly successful generating immense excitement & good discussions
- many sessions specifically about badges, including the very well-attended #occupybadges ad hoc session (pic https://twitter.com/dmlComp/status/175630861004312578 )
- Demo and new openbadges.org FTW!
- check it! http://openbadges.org/
- Need to transition from "Competition" mode to ecosystem mode:
- capturing momentum/building community
- supporting funded winners
- winner list: http://www.dmlcompetition.net/Competition/4/winners.php
- finding ways to develop strong communities including non-funded winners.
- We have that in Hive NYC as 5 members were finalists (2 winners, can we stop with the everyone gets a trophy stuff...it was a competition and that "non-funded winners" won us no favors amongst the crowd and backchannel). But also over 15 projects submitted in round one and another in educator round. I would love to capatlize on this energy. (we're working on this & wld love your opinions & help: check out the google doc link below)
- The "non-funded winners" term may prove to be an additional revenue source for organizations who didn't win funding, particularly among university-driven competitors (with specific requests from some to be listed exactly as that.) Pre-Game the web maker call! :) I get that but the optics were bad Yeah, we had a difficult to execute game plan.
- WIP rough HASTAC/MacArthur/Mozilla schedule/goals here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NXVvVal_sQOz3PjmJDmh4iWsz7LKd7m2MxdF50nsffg/edit
