First San Diego Drumbeat planning meeting agenda

Introduction Art: Open Web: ideologically- why the open, participatory web is important.

This event arises from a realization of the value to our communities that emerges from technologies and information that anyone can use, learn from, or build upon. We want to celebrate and be part of promoting projects, technologies, and services that facilitate participation, allowing anyone to become involved and innovate. This event is one way that we can ensure the internet remains a decentralized, democratic space in which responsibility and control is spread among all users.

Introduction to Drumbeat San Diego:

Many people in San Diego have excellent ideas for projects that utilize open web and open source platforms. This event would help to nourish those ideas by giving attendees the opportunity to connect with technology, creative, and legal experts who can help them. The event is about community collaboration, celebrating the opportunities that the open web allows and walking away from the event with new connections and tangible steps towards promoting projects that can have an impact in our community.

Connecting the diverse communities (technology, creative & “idea” people, activist, legal) necessary to build projects that help our community is critical to advancing the San Diego community. We want to provide a great deal of open format space and time as an opportunity for attendees to share their projects with others that can help advance their work.

Indeed we would make time and space for work to actually get done on planning and moving various projects forward. Attendees could pick between a variety of projects depending on their interests and skill sets.

We would expect people to bring ideas, enthusiasm and open mind to an event that helps us advance creative ideas locally.

Ideas we have for the day: 1/2 day agenda, on a Saturday, 60-100 ppl

Session 1

Spectrogram: This session will be highly collaborative opportunity to invite participants to share their views on the open Web, the present and future of the Internet, and on related topics.

BREAK

Session 2 Speedgeeking: This is a really easy and helpful way to get everyone talking with each other and sharing projects they are interested in. Basically there would be an inner and outer circle and we would do this in about 3-4 min intervals.

BREAK

Collaborative Break-out sessions Where people can present specific projects/ maybe we will have a “how to speak with different people about an open web session”/ working on specific project if its a small group/maybe a media production break out here.

Brainstorm-where can we go next with this?

Looking for feedback from the attendees Initial responses and questions from planning meeting attendees Key Questions we want to ask you at the Planning meeting:

  • What’s most important to you? How can we add value to this event for you?
  • How do we get the right people to the event with relevant project ideas and projects they want to work on (remember they don’t have to be brand new)?
  • How do we encourage the development of these ideas through discussion ?
  • How can we coordination this in a way that brings the best outcome?
  • How do you create a space that is very productive? How do we pick particular projects we want to hone in on?
