Intro:

We had a great time coming together to discuss the different elements of Drumbeat San Diego. In the spirit of our more informal setting, we worked on all the topics below in a decentralized way, in an open discussion where we had easels with boards to add post-its to based on the element of the event. We then discussed the ideas that sparked at the end. The process produced a lot of great ideas, got everyone participating, we moved Drumbeat forward.

It’s really important that in the coming weeks we continue our work on the different elements of making Drumbeat a success by discussing them on the google group, in person, and at future meetings.

Some key elements that need attention:

1. Continuing to build upon our great discussions of project ideas, and forging projects that will benefit San Diego (see some of the great ideas below)
2. Sharing potential spectrogram questions which will get the day started right, remember these are questions that will be asked to the entire group, and people will physically move to a space to indicate they “agree” or “disagree.” Then a discussion / debate would be facilitated.
3. What speedgeeking will look like, will it be project based (ie the projects to be worked upon later that day explaining to small groups the project and engaging in Q&A) or simply a mixer type of activity ( with an inner and outer circle allowing everyone to meet everyone else) or something else?
4. Discussing logistics of video the day of the event (see below discussion)

We agreed to hold our upcoming meetings in the different potential event spaces that we are up for consideration to see how the spaces may work for our January Drumbeat Event. We really liked being in the Bamboo Lounge and are considering using the space in the future. Flickr photos of the event can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/51718247@N08/?saved=1 we took photos last minute but had about 10-12 people show up.

The next two opportunities to join us in physical space are for the October 25 film screening of 10 tactics, and at our next Drumbeat meeting which will be the week of November 15-18. Please let us know if you have a preference that week, and plan to bring a friend to both of these events, as Drumbeat is building

Here are the Notes for the 10.12 meeting

Project Ideas:

Open San Diego & Watchdog Institute data driven project

Get a data set, and figure out how to take this data and make something useful out of it.

Choosing the data.

Lorie - More students got personal belief exemptions from getting vaccinated at county schools than in underserved communities. This was found out from collecting a data after a journalist and mother on Lorie’s staff was interested in the topic.

Were able to analyze data of infectious outbreaks, mapped it.

Asking the right questions is the critical element of seeing what can be done with the data.

Product based on what San Diego is interested in, possibly: Water quality, immunization

AND THEN, publish a study, visualizations, articles, videos, etc on this topic based on data

In order for the project to work we need data that:
1. exists
2. we need it to be good

Facebook Portability Projects: - Facebook portability application - Facebook provided SOME data portability, but you can't DO anything with data till an app is built.

Required Elements: Needs App Developers and Users.

IDEA FOR FOOD - LUNCH TRUCK

Using video to capture the event

Nicole’s comment: Aggregate video from Drumbeat attendees on a site using Miro Community applications. Allow anyone to use content for mashups to document event, use mobile devices and pro video.

1. How do we document this event on video,
2. how do we create a video as a statement of the event (and perhaps building blocks for others to create videos based on Nicole’s comment above).

Young participants such as those in programs with local colleges, MACSD, etc could be involved and help document the event and make the “statement” video.

Questions to consider:
what gear do we need?
How can we facilitate a comfortable environment where people are happy to video themselves and be videoed?
who will shoot it?

A suggestion was made for the proposed testimonial booth, that the participant be given a random question after pressing a button, and that they would have to answer that question off the cuff a la Errol Morris.
