Rundown of Thursday, September 16th meeting

Hi fellow organizers,

We’re very happy to report that we had an exciting and productive meeting last Thursday. We had an nice mixture of technologists, artists, entrepreneurs and most of us could be considered all of the above! It was really interesting and fun, I encourage any of you who couldn’t make it this time to come to our next meeting, and bring a friend along.

We are looking to have a meeting in a different venue, mid-October in a comfortable environment that we can relax and have a productive conversation about the build-up of Drumbeat and potential projects we might submit.

Some of the highlights of our conversation include:

- An update on our locations phone meeting. I’ve added this information to the Mozilla Wiki: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Drumbeat/events/SanDiego/locations/callone

Also at the meeting we spoke about the need to encourage project submissions. We already have a couple projects that we are discussing and we all agreed to make greater use of the Google Group (http://groups.google.com/group/DrumbeatSanDiego) as a place to pitch both thoughts and well-formed proposals possible project. This allows a preliminary environment for project idea development before posting to the Mozilla Drumbeat site, if desired. Please sign up for the Google Group if you haven’t already!

We will continue to be active on the Google Group. As projects develop and are submitted we can share them on the NMR submission page

We considered making our speedgeeking session an opportunity for project facilitators to present their projects in a 10 min. quick presentation. The presentations should include

  • A pitch
  • How this is a community project
  • Who do you need to help you

We will also try our best to share links with you that will inform planning for our Drumbeat event, including the worldwide Drumbeat festival in Barcelona this November, as well as other cities’ events. To start out:

Here are Drumbeat Copenhagen notes: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Drumbeat/events/copenhagen/notes

Here is the agenda for the Worldwide Drumbeat Festival in Barcelona in November https://wiki.mozilla.org/Drumbeat/events/Festival/program/activities

There were some really interesting suggestions about additional activities that will make sure Drumbeat San Diego fun and engaging:

1. Innovative video mural - Cy Kuckenbaker (filmmaker) - Cy proposed creating a sort video mural at the event using time lapse video tools - an visual representation of the participants and our community made on the premises during the event 2. Wall of problems - Andrew Reiff proposed a wall of problems, perhaps physically or virtually using Twitter, where people can post topics for discussion and engage in discussions throughout the day, asynchronously or in real time. 3. Existing projects - a showcase room for existing Drumbeat projects - this was discussed as something that is both inspiring and hands-on 4. a room or space for participants to engage in projects, discussions, and activities of their choosing, a kind of lounge for Drumbeat

A lot of cool, art related ideas started to take form and we want to make sure the event offers something up for the right-brained, left-brained and everyone in between.

Some of the actions we said we would take are:

- Promote 10 Tactics film screening http://www.newmediarights.org/10tactics which is intended as a lead up to Drumbeat and targets the activist community- gave out numerous flyers, people need to put them up. The film screening is Monday, October 25 at Joyce Beers Center in Hillcrest. Sign up at the link above as soon as you know you can make it!

- Make a concerted effort to use google groups to talk about Drumbeat, including potential projects.

- Propose specific projects - even if not well developed enough for drumbeat.org site, we can share ideas with each other through the google group http://groups.google.com/group/DrumbeatSanDiego

- Trying to improve look and feel of Drumbeat info on NMR. There is plenty of info, but we need a more attractive look as participants (not necessarily organizers) come to the site. Organizers expressed a desire for something more enticing and exciting graphically, and we could use help from other organizers on aesthetic improvements.
