Training 1: Learning from other talks and improving your own

This training is meant to teach the Evangelism Reps to learn from other talks with the goal of us sending out "talks to watch" emails every time we stumble upon them pointing out great tricks the speakers used. The benefit of this instead of telling people how to spice up their own talks is that they learn how to look out for good examples themselves and take on only what is actually part of their nature instead of trying to become the best speaker by imitation.

Promise:

"By the end of this training you'll know five tricks to make your talks more engaging"

Materials:

  • Demo video (in this case Clay Shirky: Defend our freedom to share (or Why SOPA is a bad idea))
  • Presentation screen (if done in person)
  • Two whiteboards with pens (or MoPads if online)
  • Pens and paper for everybody
  • Final test materials

Timing plan:

0 - 5min: Introduction (explaining the promise and what we'll do)

Explanation of the questions to answer from the video:

  • What tricks does the speaker use to keep the attention of the audience? Look for rhetorical devices.
  • What did he leave you and the audience with?

5 - 25min: Watching video with taking notes.

25 - 35min: Whiteboard walkaround[1] - collect information about answers

35 - 45min: Presentation preparation:

Split up into groups and prepare a quick talk together about one of our products and think of how you would present it avoiding the obvious, boring "this is X, it does this". You have 5 minutes to present.

45 - 55min: Presentations

55 - 60min: Test[2] and material handouts[3]

[1] In a Whiteboard walkaround you have different question on whiteboards in the room and you split the group up into as many sub-groups as you have whiteboards. You let each group work for a while on each and then make them switch - adding to or amending what the other group has collected

[2] The test can be a simple paper test or a Google doc that allows people to answer a few things about the course. Make sure people are not scared of the test and tell them this is only for you to make sure that people did understand what was being shown. There is no point in training people when you don't make sure they got it.

[3] People should get materials to take away - this could be a URL. The point is that in this kind of training people learn on their own and can then look through the materials at their leisure.
