We need to have the Demo Studio Challenges page up by June 1, 2010, so this is going to be a quick release with a lot of new design work. Given the static nature of most of the new content, hopefully we will be able to get MDN 0.9.5 out on time.

(P1) Demo Studio redesign + challenges page(s)

The Web o Wonder site is being shutdown at the end of June, so we need to make the Demo Studio section of MDN a bit more polished and press/media friendly. As a part of this redesign, we also need to get a couple of pages for the upcoming Demo Studio Challenges that we plan to do monthly to encourage more demo contributions.

  • Goals:
    • Freshen up the Demo Studio homepage with more graphics and better layout
      • New Demo Studio title/graphic + space for Challenge promos
      • No new features/functional changes required
    • Add a main Challenge page with basic info and challenge details
    • Create supporting Challenge pages template (for terms, faq, judges, etc)
    • Creative assets for promoting the Challenge
  • Rules:
    • Monthly challenges will focus on either:
      • 1 theme with multiple features (mobile demos with touch and orientation)
      • 1 technology/feature (CSS animations)
    • Demos must be submitted before the end of each month to be considered.
    • Any past demos are
  • Judges:
    • Combination of "HTML5 experts" and Mozilla folks (not everyone will vote every month)
    • Panel will be selected for each month's challenge based on theme/technology
  • Voting:
    • Mozilla will determine 3 - 5 finalists for each month
    • Panel will vote on criteria (TBD) and pick the winner
  • Prizes:
    • TBD, but most likely an android device, laptop, etc each month

(P1) MDN home page and header redesign

  • Goals:
    • Clean up huge promo box from home page, replace with:
      • Rethink the home page header (to compliment new simple header for the rest of the site)
      • Welcome note and messaging about what Mozilla and MDN are.
      • CTAs for major sections of MDN (Demos, Learning, Docs)
      • Focus on Web developer docs and resources
    • Create a new MDN website header to use throughout the rest of the site (except for home page)
      • Improve upon the simple banner/bar header we use for Demo Studio

(P2) Simple MDN affiliates/button page

  • Goals
    • Create affiliate button selector based on:
      • Topic: Web, Demos, HTML, CSS, or JavaScript
      • Color: Red, Orange, Gray
      • Style: Toolbox, Hotrod, etc
    • Generate tracking snippet that users can put on their blogs/sites
  • Resources
    • Buttons created by Matt Ternoway (will share link to files soon)
    • Tracking codes created with WebTrends (see this bug)

(P2) Member/developer profile system

  • Goals
    • Create a django based profile dashboard to members
      • Personal info they wish to share with the community
      • Docs feed (docs watched, edited, etc)
      • Demos feed (submitted, liked, shared, etc)
    • Link to new profile page from Demo Studio (and any other places that make sense)
  • Developer profile fields
    • Bio: Name, Location, Short description, Website, Twitter
    • Occupation?: Title, Organization, What I work on...
    • Areas of expertise: Tags for various web technologies and disciplines
