Creating a Zero Budget Event

This template is designed to help you create an impactful event to teach privacy (or another Internet policy issue) offline with no budget. The power of zero budget is that we don't need a budget for each and every event and lack of budget or resources shouldn't stop us from organizing anything.

Suggested Timeframe

  • 2-3 hours session on a particular topic offline
  • Stick to one or two topics in one event , make it only 2 hours maximum 3 hours
  • The short duration keeps people from getting bored because we don't try to give them too much information in one day

Suggested Location

  • Venues willing to provide you with space at no cost, such as school/college/residential societies/etc.

Sample Event Plan

1) Introduction to the Privacy Month Campaign. What and why we are doing it. 2) What does privacy mean? How does it matter? 3) Interact with audience, ask questions about privacy and ask them to share their opinions. 4) Give Demo or hands-on activities for the topics you have selected for the event. For ex: Lightbeam, Tor browser, Encryption , etc. There can be two or more topics it depends how you want to drive your event. 5) Tell people about the hashtags for the campaign and ask them to tweet or post.

What about swag?=

You can make a small amount of stickers go a long way. For example, only give swag to people as a reward rather than distributing it. Distributing the swag can set the wrong trend because then a lot of people may come for swag not for the cause. For ex: if you have a crowd of 80 people give swag to people who answered a question or who suggested something which you really liked or you didnt know before. This way you can have people who are really interested in the event and the impact will surely be great.
