Helping users with unsigned add-ons process:

Look for a signed version FIRST

  1. (If the add-on was installed outside of AMO, there may be a signed AMO version they can use instead!)

Find the developer's contact information or support forum and give them to the user, in a comment IF the user pushes back, explain the about:config steps to disable the signing requirement IF the user can't handle or doesn't want to change their about:config, you can always contact the developer for them or even link the developer to the support forum question! Suggesting alternative add-ons with the same or similar functionality is also a good option (especially if the user's add-on is outdated or abandonware)

SUMO Party 2015 - December 19th - Taipei meeting update: (thank you, Ernest!)

Support Forum

Addressing add-ons signing issues on the forums: Check whether there is an already signed version of the add-on on the AMO website (some users might have downladed it from the developer website). If you find a signed version direct the user to it Tell the user to contact the developer to get the add-on signed.

  • If user pushes back you can tell the user how to disable signature enforcement (xpinstall.signatures.required in about:config). Do let the user know this is an advanced feature so he shouldn't do it if he is not familiar with about:config and also that this will only solve the problem temporarily as the add-on will need to be signed at a certain point.
  • If the user is not very tech savy you can also try to contact the developer yourself.
