We are doing a brownbag about this on Thursday, August 18 at noon pacific in Mountain View and on Air Mozilla and you are welcome to come.  It would be great to get your thoughts on our plans and ideas on how to use this new resource.

I'd also like to find some time to talk with you about how to let contributors you work with know about this.  This directory will become more useful as more community members use it, so reaching out to contributors about this new resource and finding out how we can improve it to help them is important.
To really help promote the usage of the phonebook to our current contributor base, please do any or all of the following:

Thanks for your time and I'm looking forward to talking more.
* Offer a link and promotional message for the Phonebook via an e-mail to all public mailing lists associated to your contributor base
* Offer a link and promotional message via an IRC chat message to all IRC chats your contributors are located in.
* Offer a link and promotional message to any online forums your contributors reside in.

There are not a lot of value add features in this directory for the 1.0, but it is imperative that we get as many of our core contributors onto this directory as possible. To help, you can mention some of the new features that will be coming soon. Don't forget to mention the stickers!

Thanks for your time!

Before Launch

  • Create a phonebook FAQ on wiki
  • Talk with team leads and ask them to communicate to their contributor channels about the phonebook (see template email below). This process will be an ongoing communication effort with team leads that will continue after the launch. People to talk to:
    • Stas (l10n) (Gen)
    • Pascalc (mozilla europe) (David)
    • Jay (MDN) (Aakash)
    • Gen (Asia) (Gen)
    • Mary (Latin America and Marketing) (Mary)
    • William/Pierros (ReMo and Africa and Middle East) (David)
    • Juan/Marcia/Clint/Stephen/Tomcat (QA) (Aakash)
    • Kadir/ (SuMo) (Gen)
    • Willamr (AoA) (Jason)
    • Jorge (addons) (Aakash)
    • Jeff (Jetpack ambassadors) (David)
    • pbiggar/jdm/mbrubeck/khuey (coding) (Aakash)
    • jenzed/rtanglao (thunderbird) (David)
    • dbolter (accessibility) (David)
    • dees (Labs) (Jason)
    • Atul, Michelle (Mofo) (Gen)
    • Jason/Julie (students) (Jason)
    • Please add other suggestions...

At Launch

  • Send invitations to a seed group of pre-vouched contributors (see bug 674653). This will reach many existing contributors and will create a user base to vouch for new profile requests. (David)
  • Announce launch of the site on Monday meeting, Planet, About Mozilla newsletter, email to everyone, email to sign-ups at mozilla.org/phonebook, email to mozillians mailing list, notice in Bugzilla. Note: some channels like Facebook or a snippet don't make sense because it isn't going to reach an audience of people likely to use the phonebook. (David)
  • In addition to an announcement post, do a blog series about how it was built -- ask Ozten, Tofumatt, Dave, Gerv, etc. to post. There is an interesting technical story here about how we're using LDAP and approaching privacy. (Aakash)

Soon After Launch

  • Communicate about sticker (see bug 656473) for the first group of people to sign up on site (need to determine how many to print and how to distribute). (David)
  • Second public brown bag to walk people through how to use site and how it can help them and to get people involved in phonebook roadmap. (David and Aakash and Webdev team)

Notes

Email to Team Leads about Phonebook

I wanted to let you know about the Mozilla Community Directory that will be launching soon. This will be like the employee phonebook, but it will be available to all Mozillians and will help us keep track of who is in the community and what they are doing.

We are doing a brownbag about this on Thursday, August 18 at noon pacific in Mountain View and on Air Mozilla and you are welcome to come. It would be great to get your thoughts on our plans and ideas on how to use this new resource.

To really help promote the usage of the phonebook to our current contributor base, please do any or all of the following:

  • Offer a link and promotional message for the Phonebook via an e-mail to all public mailing lists associated to your contributor base
  • Offer a link and promotional message via an IRC chat message to all IRC chats your contributors are located in.
  • Offer a link and promotional message to any online forums your contributors reside in.

There are not a lot of value add features in this directory for the 1.0, but it is imperative that we get as many of our core contributors onto this directory as possible. To help, you can mention some of the new features that will be coming soon. Don't forget to mention the stickers!
