Area of Contribution (Team Name): Gecko (few very minor bugs in the layout engine)

How are you currently involved with the community?: We are two of the very few non-staff Asian contributors who have contributed patches (although not so many) to Gecko. We try hard to recruit new contributors via the mentored bug program on #mozilla-taiwan with certain level of success. (not so high though). We are part of the Mozilla Taiwan community (MozTW).

Location of Work (where do you reside?): Beijing (Kenny's base. He mentors people remotely), Taipei

Talk Length (please choose between 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes): 60

Summary: (Thomasy's version) This session tells the audience how to participant in Mozilla project from a programmer aspect. Share experience of promoting "First good bug" including difficulties and our outcome of mentored bug in Taiwan.

(Kenny's version) Asian people are usually considered smart but for some mysterious reasons you see very few of them on Bugzilla. While Kenny and Thomasy try to improve this situation via the mentored bugs program and other communities such as the W3C HTML5 Chinese Interest Group, their achievement might or might not be considered successful. Therefore, they would like to share their experience (for one of what we learned, see title :p) and see if they can figure out what the real problems are and hopefully get some advices from senior contributors. Yes, they would also like to recruit more contributors in this session.

This is highly related to Mentoring new developers, and common stumbling blocks of new contributors but our experiences might be interesting too (since we are quite inexperienced :p).

How your session furthers the MozCamp Goals: Language barrier? Selfish-ness? Communication channel (IRC, mailing list, etc.)? By understanding more about what make Asian people contribute less to Mozilla (and the Web standards community), it might be easier to come up with a strategy to grow this undeveloped area (Asia).

Expected Outcome or Deliverable:

  • Get more Chinese/non-Chinese speakers on #mozilla-taiwan.
  • A better idea about community development of Mozilla, especially for coders.
  • (Optional) A document of best practices for recruiting coders, especially for Asian people.
  • (Optional) Better understanding of web standard
  • (Optional) Fix your first good bug
