Title of Session: Introducing the Firefox Social API

Facilitator(s): Jared Wein, Gavin Sharp

How are you currently involved with the community?:

  • Jared: Mentored 25 bugs with over 12 contributors and have worked with a semester long student-project for a new version of the Firefox preferences.
  • Gavin: Firefox module owner, have been involved with l10n and development community since 2004.

Location of Work (where do you reside?): Mountain View

Talk Length (please choose between 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes): 60 minutes

Summary: We'll discuss the overall goals of the Social API project, the current state of development, and our future plans for the feature. We'll go over the current state of the UI, and the back-end architecture that enables those features, and then take questions.

How your session furthers the MozCamp Goals (https://wiki.mozilla.org/MozCampEU2012/Tracks): The SocialAPI is one of our tools for increasing the growth of Firefox desktop usage, and teaching developers and the community about the new SocialAPI, as well as how to build with it can grow its adoption and further grow Firefox' adoption.

Expected Outcome or Deliverable: Increased understanding of the new SocialAPI and a room full of evangelists who can help defend any potential privacy-related criticism that may come about from the new API.

Desired Audience Type or Skill-set: Web developers and technology enthusiasts, also helps if they are interested in social networks :)

Equipment Needs (Video projector already included): wifi or ethernet connection for attendees
