Summary: Localisation presents an under exploited opportunity to involve more people in the Mozilla community. It also provides an amazing differentiator for Mozilla products.
While most commercial companies will struggle to localise into 35 languages, social localisation has allowed companies to deliver 100+ translations. Mozilla and our users have the opportunity to take our products well beyond these number. To places where economics isn't the main driver, but rather where access to the open web becomes a key driver.
Verbatim has recently undergone a major revamp and upgrade. We will spend the first part of the session going through new features as they relate to Social Localisation. In the second part the group will brainstorm what is needed to get greater community participation in localisation. They will then select the best of these ideas and create use cases, mockups or basic specs so that these ideas can be used to drive Verbatim to become an even richer Social Localisation platform.
How your session furthers the MozCamp Goals (https://wiki.mozilla.org/MozCampEU2012/Tracks): Exploiting language to grow usage in key European countries, Growing and building communities through language, Product localisation.
Expected Outcome or Deliverable: Exposure of localisers to the new features of Verbatim. Basic scoping of 10 features that could boost Verbatim as a social translation platform.
Desired Audience Type or Skill-set: Localisers, local language community members, non-English locales, anyone interested in growing community participation in Mozilla.
Equipment Needs (Video projector already included): Whiteboard and post-its.
