  • Community experiments result

Hypothesis 1: By unifying the permission system between the two contribution areas, we can increase the overall contribution number from both areas.

Hypothesis 2: Guided video onboarding can help contributors secure significant contributions within 1–2 days of joining the program.

Main metric: Reply conversion rate (percentage between total replies divided by total interactions).

Results

Unified permission

Control Group A performs better than the Control group B (30.72% compared to 10%). However, the actual permission unification may not directly impact the increase in contribution number in Control Group A. We draw this conclusion for a few reasons:

  • Contributors are likely to stick with their contribution preference.
  • We do send more communication to Control Group A than Control Group B, so it’s likely that the frequency of comms may influence the increase in their contribution number than the actual unified permission itself.

With that in mind, there’s an opportunity we can get from having a unified permission. Because we do see contributors who do cross-contribution, mostly from Twitter to Play Store (not vice versa). Many of them are folks who have the ability to speak another language outside of English. This is maybe an area that we can optimized our contributor community.

Guided video onboarding

By communicating about the video tutorials to the 2023 cohort, we do see significant number of contribution from this group. However, the most well-performing cohort is actually those who joined in 2022, with >38% reply conversion rate (compared to the 2023 cohort with 16.5%).

In summary, we believe that contributors need time to find the right contribution rhythm. This means that securing contribution within a few days of joining shouldn’t be the goal of the onboarding process. However, we still see the value of providing the right information to contributors during this critical period. It’s proven by the good completion rate of the tutorial videos that we have created for this experiment. The average completion rate is at 68.6%, compared to the 55% industry standard for a 2-10 minute video.

  • Maternity leave update. We'll be joined by a new Community Manager on the 10th of July while Kiki will be leaving on the July 24 - Oct 23rd.


Device Migration Project

The Device Migration project was a partnership between the Firefox team and SUMO, where we created a new embedded migration "wizard" to help users on older devices enable sync and get ready for setting up Firefox on their new computer.
