AGENDA

Expanding for Open Data Teaching Kits (Karen, 5 min)

Context/Links:

Notes

what is already there in terms of activities?

  • Seems simple and really easy to teach!
  • Use a city or location to discover different kinds of data (i.e. GPS locations, landmarks, personal memories)

Brainstorming \[silent etherpadding\]

What "data" would you like to see used in an open data activity?

What activity ideas do you have that relate to open data?

Questions:

  • What is "Open Data"?
    • Open data is the idea that certain data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control. The goals of the open data movement are similar to those of other "Open" movements such as open source, open hardware, open content, and open access. The philosophy behind open data has been long established (for example in the Mertonian tradition of science), but the term "open data" itself is recent, gaining popularity with the rise of the Internet and World Wide Web and, especially, with the launch of open-data government initiatives such as Data.gov and Data.gov.uk.[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_data]
  • What is the difference between Open Data and Open Media?
    • I think Open Media is an organisation, whereas Open Data is a *movement*
    • Agree, I haven't heard the term open media used frequently outside of the OpenMedia an organization's name in Canada https://openmedia.ca/

How to get involved:

  • contact me @smithisgeneric
  • Laura suggested School of Data as a contact

Open Source in Taiwan (Oliver, 5-15min)

Context/Links:

Was recently in Asia for attending GNOME Asia Summit 2014 http://sakananote2english.blogspot.tw/2014/06/gnomeasia-summit-2014.html https://storify.com/oliverp/asia-trip

  • During my one week stay in Taipei I learned some things about open source and the Mozilla community I want to share.

Questions:

  • No questions but that was super interesting Oliver, thanks :)

Topic: Super Mentor and Mentor Badge design (Michelle)

  • Quick vote! What ones do you like best for Super Mentor and Mentor?
  • I like the second one for the Super Mentor badge. With the big torch and the little torch.
  • If the third one had the center torch slightly bigger than the other two I would think that would be perfect for 'super mentor'.
  • I like number 2 for Mentor, the little torch being mentored by the big one. For super I'd explore this one but with the stars to show the 'super' status. So not have the torch get 'smaller'? > Could do, but not sure that difference would be as obvious as stars.  +1
  • ^^ That's what I was going to say exactly! Would add stars for SM too :) Maybe not stars, maybe should explore some other glyph...
  • I am a fan of number 2 for the same reason as  OLIVER!!! :) (Oliver =) )- Little torch being mentored by the bigger
  • 2 is great. Can we add stars to 2 for Super mentor?
  • Love number 2, makes me think of the torch relay from the Olympics.
  • I quite liked the laurel wreaths I saw floating around in one bug (amongst the thousands ;-)
