UX & User Research
Market Insights from the Product Marketing Strategy Team
Desktop / Platform
- Chrome Web app developers are now able to make use of Google Cloud Messaging for Chrome to enable efficient notifications to Chrome users. Notifications only work when the user is signed into Chrome.
Microsoft
- Microsoft, in a blog post, released a series of third-party market research reports that described how iPad users were unhappy with the browsers on their tablets, and how MSIE10 performed better than competition from Safari or Chrome.
- Microsoft also produced a short-but-interesting video of how to develop for Windows Phone using HTML5 and Javascript
- Microsoft announced that a free update to Windows 8, Windows 8.1, will be release later this year. A rumoured feature will be return of the Start Button.
- In related news, analysts are asserting that Microsoft may walk away from the Windows RT platform due to poor industry takeup.
W3C
- A First Public Working Draft of the HTML5 Encrypted Media Extensions standard, providing for HTML5 APIs to control the playback of DFM-protected content. An international coalition of internet freedom organizations urged the W3C to abandon the effort.
